Papagayo Beach: How to get there, opening hours and prices

Located in the south of Lanzarote, Papagayo Beach is one of the Canary Islands’ most emblematic jewels. This paradise of golden sand and crystal clear waters is a must-see destination for those seeking sun, tranquillity and a unique natural landscape. In this article we tell you how to get there, its opening hours and everything you need to know to make the most of your visit. Let’s find out more!

What makes Papagayo Beach different?

Papagayo Beach stands out for its location in the Natural Park of Los Ajaches, a protected reserve that guarantees its natural beauty and the conservation of its environment. What makes it unique is its fine golden sand, the contrast of its turquoise waters with the volcanic landscape and its tranquil atmosphere, far from the hustle and bustle of the more urbanised areas.

In addition, this beach is perfect for snorkelling thanks to the clarity of its waters and the marine diversity it harbours. Its semi-circular bay shape also protects it from the wind, making it an ideal place to relax at any time of the year.

How to get to Papagayo Beach

Getting to Papagayo Beach is easy, although it depends on your preferences and means of transport:

  • By car: from Playa Blanca, follow the signs to Los Ajaches Natural Park. There is a dirt road leading directly to the beach. Although the route is not tarmacked, most vehicles will have little difficulty driving along it.

  • On foot or by bicycle: if you like hiking or cycling, you can choose to follow the paths that surround the natural park. The views are spectacular, especially at sunrise or sunset.

  • Bus: if you’re taking public transport, bus lines 30 and 43 pass close to Papagayo Beach.

  • By boat or organised excursion: from the port of Playa Blanca, many companies offer boat excursions that include stops at Papagayo Beach. It is an ideal option for those looking to combine a day of sailing with time on the beach.

What are Papagayo Beach’s opening hours?

Being part of the Los Ajaches Natural Park, Papagayo Beach is open to the public all year round, generally from sunrise to sunset. However, it is important to note that during the summer months, the beaches are open from 9am until 7pm and access by car or bicycle is restricted outside these hours to preserve the natural environment.

The best times to enjoy the beach are early in the morning, when it is less crowded, or in the late afternoon, when the sun begins to set and the landscape takes on magical hues.

How much does it cost to enter Papagayo Beach? Prices in 2025

To access Papagayo Beach by car or motorbike, it is necessary to pay a small fee that contributes to the maintenance of the Los Ajaches Natural Park. In 2025, the updated prices are as follows:

  • Private cars: €3 per vehicle

  • Motorbikes: €2

  • On foot or by bicycle: free of charge

These fees are payable at the park access control point and allow you to enjoy all the beaches within the nature reserve, including others such as Playa Mujeres or Playa del Pozo.

Why is it called Papagayo Beach?

The name Papagayo Beach has several interesting theories. The most popular suggests that it comes from the shape of the bay, which resembles the silhouette of a parrot with its wings outstretched. Another theory suggests that it could be related to the fauna that inhabited the area in the past.

Whatever its origin, the name adds an exotic and mysterious touch to this paradisiacal corner of paradise, boosting its appeal as a must-see destination in Lanzarote.
