What Exactly Is a MICHELIN Key

It's worth explaining, because the distinction is recent and hasn't yet become part of the regular traveler's vocabulary. Michelin introduced the Keys in 2024 as the hotel world's equivalent of what Stars represent for restaurants: a recognition system based on anonymous inspections, not surveys or guest reviews. There are three levels. One Key means "a very special stay"; two Keys, "an exceptional stay"; three Keys, "an extraordinary stay." To reach any of them, inspectors evaluate five criteria: architecture and interior design, quality of service, personality and character of the hotel, value for money, and its contribution to the experience of the place where it's located.

The numbers put this in perspective. In the 2026 global selection, there are 2,020 hotels with one Key, 657 with two, and only 155 with three, spread across the entire planet. This isn't a label handed out generously: it's a strict filter, applied hotel by hotel, with no local exceptions. That there's already a hotel with a Michelin Key in the Canary Islands —and that it's this one, in a village in the interior of Lanzarote, far from the most obvious hotel circuits— says as much about the place as it does about the evaluation system itself.

The story of César Lanzarote begins in La Asomada, an agricultural village in the island's interior, in what was once the Manrique family home. The hotel, with just twenty rooms and adults-only, opened its doors in 2023 amid a volcanic landscape that unfolds toward the vineyards of La Geria, that geometry of black hollows and stone walls that is probably the most photographed farmland in the Canary Islands without ever being an easy postcard.

What distinguishes the project isn't just the location, but the way it has built its relationship with it. The hotel operates largely off the conventional grid, with its own solar energy and desalination capacity, and has revived a vineyard on the estate that now bears fruit again. These aren't aesthetic decisions; they're ones the place demanded.

Michelin itself sums it up better than anyone: surrounded only by sea and mountain views, Hotel César Lanzarote revolves around the idea of slowing down and disconnecting. The rooms take their language from the surrounding nature, with materials of marked texture in blue and green tones. The wellness offering includes yoga classes, gym, and spa treatments, plus the possibility of staying active outdoors with hiking, cycling, horseback riding, or golf. It is, in the inspectors' own definition, a hotel that understands its landscape as much as it understands its guests —exactly what a Michelin Key seeks to reward.

The distinction also confirms something Annua Hotels has been championing since 2021, when brothers Iñaki and Álvaro Sasiambarrena founded the group: that boutique luxury in the Balearic and Canary Islands can be built from the character of the place, not against it.
