What is Cova des Coloms and how can you get there?

Menorca is an island full of natural wonders, and among them is Cova des Coloms, one of the most impressive caves on the island. Known as the "Cathedral of Menorca", this cave is an essential destination for hiking and nature lovers. Discover the Cova des Coloms and all its history. Make the most of your visit with the following tips.

What is the Cova des Coloms?

The Cova des Coloms is a natural cave located in the Barranco de Binigaus, in the south of Menorca. Its large size and elongated shape have earned it the nickname "The Cathedral", as it is approximately 24 metres high, 15 metres wide and 110 metres deep.

It is believed that in prehistoric times it was used by the Talayotic culture as a place for rituals and burials. Nowadays, it is a perfect destination for a different kind of excursion in Menorca, surrounded by nature and tranquillity.

Unlike other caves on the island, no special equipment or permits are required to visit, making it an ideal plan for anyone.

How to get to Cova des Coloms

Cova des Coloms is located near the village of Es Migjorn Gran, in the south of Menorca. There are several options for getting there:

  1. By car: the quickest and easiest way is to drive to Es Migjorn Gran and park near the start of the path leading to the cave. From there, just follow the path on foot along the Barranco de Binigaus.
  2. By bus: during the high season, there are buses that connect Mahón and Ciutadella with Es Migjorn Gran. From the bus stop, the walk to the cave takes about 40 minutes.
  3. On foot or by bicycle: if you prefer a more natural experience, you can do the route on foot or by bicycle from other nearby points, such as Sant Tomàs or Ferreries, following the Camí de Cavalls.

Enjoy a route through Cova des Coloms

The route to Cova des Coloms is one of the most beautiful walks in Menorca, crossing the spectacular Barranco de Binigaus, a landscape full of native vegetation and impressive rock formations.

The most recommended route starts at Es Migjorns Gran, with an approximate distance of 3 km (round trip), easy level of difficulty and an approximate duration of 45-60 minutes one way. In terms of terrain, there are dirt tracks and some rocky areas. The path is accessible to most people and is not very steep.

For this route, we recommend wearing comfortable shoes for walking on uneven terrain, water and sun protection, especially in summer, and a torch or head torch if you want to explore inside the cave.

Visits to the cave are not regulated, so you are free to explore it. However, it is not advisable to enter if it has rained recently, as the ground may be slippery. Remember to respect the natural environment and do not leave litter in the area.
