Cap de Formentor: What it is and how to get to this stunning spot

Visiting Mallorca and not going to Cap de Formentor is like missing one of the most iconic landscapes of the Mediterranean. This rugged cape, located at the northern tip of the island, is a natural gem combining dizzying cliffs, spectacular viewpoints, and sunsets that stay etched in memory. In this guide we tell you what Cap de Formentor is, why it is known as the "End of the Mallorcan world", and how you can get there to enjoy it with all your senses.

Cap de Formentor: the Mallorcan Finisterre to enjoy magical sunsets

Commonly known as the "Finisterre of Mallorca", Cap de Formentor is the northernmost point of the island. Its winding road cuts through pine forests, dizzying cliffs and natural viewpoints where you can gaze at the endless blue sea.

One of its major attractions is the famous Formentor Lighthouse, which crowns the cliff 210 metres above sea level. From there, the views are as stunning as the sense of isolation. It's a perfect place to sit in silence, let the wind blow, and simply observe.

But beyond its visual value, Cap de Formentor has something special: a serene and wild energy at the same time, connecting you to the land and the sea. It’s no coincidence that many choose it to witness the most magical sunsets in Mallorca. It’s definitely a must-do if you're spending 3 days in Mallorca.

How to get to Cap de Formentor

Getting to Cap de Formentor requires some planning, especially in high season, but the experience is worth every kilometre.

By car

From Pollença, take the MA-2210 road towards the Es Colomer viewpoint. From there, the road becomes narrower and more winding, but also more spectacular. It’s about 20 km in total, which takes around 40 minutes to drive.

Important: between June and September, access to the lighthouse is restricted to private vehicles during certain times of the day. In that case, you must use the shuttle buses provided.

By bike

The road is also very popular with cyclists for its beauty and challenge. If you love cycling, it’s one of the island’s most iconic routes.

By boat

Some boat excursions depart from the Port of Pollença and allow you to see the cape’s cliffs from the sea — a completely different and lesser-known perspective.

Tip: Avoid the midday hours in summer. The ideal time to visit Cap de Formentor is at sunrise or sunset, when the light completely transforms the landscape.
