All about the Mirador del Rio in Lanzarote

El Mirador del Río is one of the most iconic and fascinating places in Lanzarote. Designed by the famous artist César Manrique, this viewpoint offers spectacular views of the Chinijo Archipelago, including the island of La Graciosa and a spectacular panoramic view of Lanzarote. We tell you everything you should bear in mind to make the most of your visit

What is the Mirador del Rio in Lanzarote?

The Mirador del Río is not just a vantage point; it is an architectural masterpiece that combines art, nature and functionality. Built in the 1970s by César Manrique, this viewpoint is perfectly integrated into the volcanic landscape of the Risco de Famara, 475 metres above sea level.

From here, the views are breathtaking: the contrast between the blue tones of the ocean, the volcanic formations and the small islands of the Chinijo Archipelago will leave you speechless. The interior of the viewpoint also houses a cosy café and a souvenir shop, where you can enjoy the characteristic architecture and design of the artist César Manrique.

How to get to the Mirador del Río

El Mirador del Río is located in the north of Lanzarote, near the municipality of Haría. Here we explain the options for getting there:

  • By car: from Arrecife, take the LZ-1 north towards Haría and follow the signs to the viewpoint. The journey takes approximately 40 minutes. Free parking is available near the viewpoint.
  • By public transport: although there are no direct buses to the viewpoint, you can take a bus to Haría, and from there, opt for a taxi or an organised excursion.
  • Guided tours: many tour companies in Lanzarote offer visits to the Mirador del Río as part of a tour of the island. This option is ideal if you don’t want to worry about transport.

How long does it take to see the Mirador del Río Lanzarote?

The time you need to visit the Mirador del Rio depends on your interest in exploring the details of the site. In general, if you are thinking of a quick tour where you can enjoy the views and take pictures, it can take between 20 and 30 minutes. If you decide to enjoy a coffee inside and explore the architecture of the lookout, you can spend between 1 and 1.5 hours there.

If you plan to combine your visit with other nearby sites, such as the Jameos del Agua or the Cueva de los Verdes, set aside at least half a day to enjoy the northern part of Lanzarote.

Watching the sunset at the Mirador del Rio

One of the most magical times to visit the Mirador del Río is at sunset. Although the official viewpoint closes before the sun sets, the surroundings of the Risco de Famara offer alternative spots to enjoy this natural spectacle.

The way light and shadow play at sunset enhances the colours of the landscape, creating a unique experience. Bringing a light jacket is advised, as the altitude and wind can cause temperatures to drop quickly at the end of the day.
